Tom Elwes BSc(Hons) BVetMed Pg(SADI) MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon

Tom graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2014, and is a certified "Advanced Practitioner" in diagnostic imaging. He loves all aspects of diagnostic imaging but has a particular interest in ultrasonography, seeing referral cases in both echocardiography (heart scans) and abdominal ultrasound since 2023. He likes to develop his expertise with various veterinary gadgets such as laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, endoscopy and performing CT scans. He lives in Cornwall with his wife, daughter, 2 cats and a labrador. 

Tom can assess the following structures with abdominal ultrasound:

  • Left & Right limbs & the body of the pancreas including assessment of the pancreatic duct
  • Pyloroduodenal junction
  • Ileocecocolic junction
  • Hepaobiliary system including cystic duct and common bile duct
  • Duodenal papilla
  • Renal pelvis and proximal ureters
  • Ureterovesical junction- for assessment of ectopic ureters
  • Portal vein, Aorta and Caudal Vena Cava
  • Routine assessment of medial iliac and mesenteric lymph nodes and assessment of other abdominal lymph nodes if enlarged
  • Right and left adrenal glands
  • Urogenital system to include ovaries, uterus & testes if present as well as prostate
  • Assess duodenum, jejunum, ileum & colon and any changes with intestinal wall thickness and layering
  • Ultrasound guided biopsies (both Tru-cut and FNA)

Echo:

- All standard right, left and subcostal views of the heart

- M-mode assessment including EPSS and Fractional Shortening

- Ejection fraction

- Spectral doppler to include

  • Mitral inflow
  • Tricuspid inflow
  • Aortic outflow
  • Pulmonary artery outflow

- E/A ratio

- E:IVRT

- TAPSE/Ao

- LA/Ao

- LA/Aolax
